The Stipend ProgramChildren’s Well-being League works in partnership with school designated liaisons, Guidance Counselors or school Social Workers, from each county and city high schools. These liaisons recommend students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need for the Stipend Program. In the academic year 2023-2024 approximately 305 students will take part in this program. There are waiting lists at every school.
Each stipend student receives a monthly stipend of $60 with an additional $75 for the holidays and upon graduation. Each year one senior from each school is selected as a CWL Senior Scholar. He or she receives an additional award of $100 upon graduation. Typically, students use the money to supplement basic necessities like rent, groceries, and personal supplies. They also use it for school fees, field trips, and, sometimes, to just be able to join their friends in typical activities like a night at the movies. Since CWL began in 1923, there has been one common purpose: to improve the lives and education of students in the Buncombe County area. The Stipend Program has been an important means to achieve this goal. Each year many of the graduates in the program go on to reach for their own goals in higher education. |
