Endowed College Scholarships

These need-based scholarships are designated for Buncombe County residents,
preferably for CWL stipend legacy students and many recipients are first generation college students
A-B Tech Scholarship
To celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2000, and with the advent of the 21st Century, CWL endowed a scholarship for students in
our community to attend AB Tech.  Since the initial investment of $10,000.00 this endowment has grown over $160,000.00.
At the beginning of the 2019 – 2020 academic year, four students received scholarships.

UNCA Scholarship

In 2004, CWL invested $25,000.00 toward a new scholarship at UNCA which has grown to an endowment of over $50,000.00.
CWL supported one deserving student at UNCA during the 2021-22 academic year.

The CORE Scholarship
(Connecting Opportunities for Regional Excellence)
In May of 2015, CWL  joined with other community donors to fund the CORE Scholarship.  It supports local students who start their education at AB Tech and transition to UNCA for a bachelor’s degree. Our endowment has now reached $68,000.00 and recipients received $6,747 in the 2021-22 calendar year. We are currently supporting three students.

Avid
(Advancement Via Individual Determination)
In addition to our endowed scholarships, CWL began supporting the AVID program at UNCA in 2018.  These funds provide “last dollar” assistance for 1st generation and/or minority students. The program emphasizes collaborative study activities and social connections to promote successful transition to secondary education.

Statistics show that
earnings of bachelor’s degree recipients working full time were $24,900 higher than those of high school graduates.

Median 2018 earnings by degree levels were:
High School: $40,500
Associate’s: $50,100
Bachelor’s: $65,400
